In 1855, Baron Felice Spitaleri di Muglia planted the Bordeaux vines Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the same grape varieties that still produce this important wine today, on the Solicchiata estate , located on vast volcanic terraces on Mount Etna, between 800 and 1000 meters above sea level. He also produced Italy's first Pinot Noir, the basis of which provided the formula for the first Etna Rosso, which he himself invented. Castello di Solicchiata is still the Italian wine that has won the most awards in international competitions.
