1980 kaufte Lodovico Antinori dieses Gut in der toskanischen Maremma, unweit vom rtchen Bolgheri. Die Tenuta dell Ornellaia liegt auf den Hügeln neben der Tenuta San Guido, wo der legendäre Sassicaia wächst. Thomas Duroux, der Weinmacher auf Ornellaia und Michel Rolland, der ihn berät, sind überzeugt, dass es auf der ganzen Welt nur zwei Regionen gibt, wo die Rebsorte Cabernet optimale Ergebnisse bringt: im Bordeaux, wo sie beide herkommen, und um Bolgheri. Lodovico Antinori liess Boden und Klima sorgfältig analysieren. 1981 begann er die Rebsorten zu pflanzen, aus denen auf Ornellaia grosse Weine entstehen konnten: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, etwas Cabernet Franc und weissen Sauvignon. Bis 1992 wurden 70 ha Weinberge gepflanzt. In kürzester Zeit machte der Ornellaia seinen Weg in die Gruppe der gesuchtesten Weine der Welt. Den 98er Ornellaia feierte der Wine Spectator als den besten Rotwein der Welt.

A vintage born from an initially cool, then warm wine year, in which only the precisely timed harvest date ensured that freshness and aromatic quality were preserved. The fragrance spectrum of these wines is broad and clear, with the fine spiciness of fully ripe fruit combined with pleasant accents of aromatic herbs or chocolate. The harmonious volume immediately unfolds in the mouth, while fully preserving the fine taste, with an extremely delicate and silky tannin, which is carried by a lively and acidic-fresh note at the end without any astringency.
